[The importance of surveillance for effective bagworm and nettle caterpillar control in oil palm]
1999
Liew, V.K.
In the control of bagworms and nettle caterpillars in oil palm, information on the location of the pest and the perimeter of area infested and the developmental stage of the pest is critical for any control measures to be effective. Census as a surveillance tool is important in providing such information. The critical population level of the pest should be kept at 5-10 larvae/frond. Census blocks should be kept at a manageable size of about 50 ha to facilitate control measures. A one percent census of the palms in each block is adequate. A systematic census gives management adequate time to prepare and to implement controls and thus prevents the spread of the pests before they reach outbreak proportions.
