MMSU Gold, a new mango variety

`Carabao' mango trees and other mango species were evaluated for three years. One of the accessions identified, Payao 2, won the Best Mango Selection in 1995. After two years of evaluation, Payao 2 was registered with the National Seed Industry Council (NSIC) as a new variety, the MMSU Gold. Mango accessions collected were characterized based on their morphological characteristics and isozyme banding patterns. The different varieties and species were found to differ in terms of their five isozyme systems, namely: ioscitric dehydrogenase (IDH), phosphoglucomutase (PGM), phosphoglucoisomerase (PGI), malate dehydrogenase (MDH), and aminopeptidase (AMP). MMSU Gold is a heavy yielder with medium to large fruits averaging 288 g. The fruit is thin-seeded, very sweet and juicy with smooth and firm flesh texture. When ripe it has yellow skin and flesh color. It has an average brix content of 18 percent and 74.13 percent edible portion. Mass propagation is now underway to meet the increasing demand for quality planting materials of MMSU Gold in the Ilocos region
