Establishment of rattan gene bank in Malaybalay City, Bukidnon and expansion in Mt. Makiling, Los Banos, Laguna [Philippines]

This project endeavored to conserve rattan species in the country. The gene banks in Mt. Makiling and Malaybalay [Philippines] aimed to collect and maintain various rattan species and preserve a number of herbarium voucher specimens in the living garden. At present, the Mt. Makiling rattan gene bank is maintaining 293 living samples of rattan species collected from various parts of the country. The rattan samples include 41 species and varieties of rattan, representing the four genera Calamus, Daemonorops, Korthalsia and Plectocomia. By measuring the height and diameter, the growth performance of each taxum was assessed. For the clump-forming species, the number of suckers produced was counted. In the Malaybalay gene bank, 407 samples of rattan representing 24 taxa have already been outplanted. Aside from this, herbarium specimens representing 27 taxa are being maintained
