Shoot culture and plant regeneration in Benguet City (Lilium philippinensis)

Indigenous ornamental plants like the Benguet lily (Lilium philippinensis) have gained the attention of local horticulturists. With increased interest in the crop, it is perceived that there would be an increased demand for planting material for production and experimental materials for non-conventional plant breeding. The tissue culture requirements for its propagation were investigated using shoot tips, leaves, nodes, and internodes. Re-growth to complete plants from excised shoot tips and nodes was obtained even in simple culture media. These explants as well as leaf sections and internodes developed bulbous structures on cytokinin (BAP)-supplemented culture media. These bulbous structure developed into proliferating shoot-like cultures or to complete plants even on simple culture media. Aerial microbulblets and typical basally located microbulblets were obtained during prolonged shoot cultures (i.e. 3-month culture cycle).
