Potential of high stumped budding in reducing tapping maturity in rubber (Hevea brasiliensis Muell. Arg.)

On of the problems in rubber culture is the long wait for the productive stage, which usually lasts for 6 to 7 years among the smallholder. This period of immaturity, is a very long wait especially among the small farmers with small piece of land and with farming as the only source of income. To help ease the problem, a study was conducted at the Philippine Industrial Crops Research Institute (PICRI), from September, 1987 to December, 1996 to verify the effectivity of high stumped budding as planting materials in reducing the unproductive period of rubber trees; determine the length of reduction period of immaturity, and, to determine the yield performance using clone RRIM 600. Two-year-old high stumped budding of clone RRIM 600 as planting material, shortened the immaturity period of rubber plantation. Rubber trees were tappable 1 year and 6 months earlier, that is, 3 years and a half after planting. On the fourth year of tapping, the average latex yield per tree was 190.60 ml per tree and the average dry rubber content of the latex was 36.65 percent
