Preliminary assessment of the impacts of El Nino on the fisheries in Region 2 [Cagayan Valley Region, Philippines]

The effect of El Nino in the region can be said to be positive and negative. To some extent, capture fisheries (marine) remarkably show a favorable increase in fish production. The sea's surface temperature is theorized to increase primary production along the coast that in turn influences horizontal migration and aggregation of fishes nearshore. Nonetheless, the abnormality of high temperature coupled with the reduction of rainfall to replenish the water requirements of ponds and irrigation reservoirs produce adverse effects on aquaculture. It is also evident that the occurrence of high temperature and salinity affects brackishwater fishponds. El Nino generally affects fisheries in terms of production and income of the fisherfolk in the industry. On aquaculture, the reduction of precipitation coupled with the high temperature reduces production. Harvest of immature stocks lowers the value of produce thus reducing income to fish farmers. Increase in production of commercial and marine municipal fisheries is not necessarily resulting to high income among fishermen. And the adverse effects cannot be accurately determined due to insufficient data in the ocean-climate and biological conditions.
