Application of soil productivity capability classification for alternative land use and management of rice-based Maapag soil series in Bukidnon [Philippines]

The result of the study revealed that in the rice-based Maapag soil series, 62.05 percent or 5,612 hectares and 39.95 percent or 3,432 hectares of the total area surveyed belong to the orders entisol and inceptisol, respectively. At subgroup level, the entisol was further classified as typic epiaquents (5,612 ha) and inceptisol as typic tropaquepts (1957 ha), typic dystropepts (1,355 ha) as part of the broad alluvial plain and typic eutropepts representing the 120 hectares of sloping and undulating slightly dissected hills. The inceptisol and entisol were delineated to four and five soil mapping units, respectively. The tropaquepts showed an inclusion of mellic epiaquents. The study scientifically proved that the existing rice-based production systems is the best land use with its highly productive status or Class 1 soils. It showed further that the productivity assessment of the soil mapping units were downgraded from highly productive (Class 1) to moderately productive or Class 2 when converted to orchard, upland and pasture production systems. The soil productivity capacity classification map and soil quality limitation index served as guide for specific soil management interventions in each soil mapping units
