Six wheat varieties viz., Blue Silver, Punjab-81, WL-711, Yecora, HD-2009 and Sonalika were tested in laboratory as well as in the field for natural infection of loose smut. Infected embryos showed a wide range of infection pattern. In some cases the whole scutellum (6.5%) including plumular bud (5.1%) was invaded by mycelium, but in some other cases only few hyphae were present and it was rarely seen on radicle. The field observations demonstrated that infection of plumular bud tissues of embryo is directly correlated to the development of smut in adult plants, the ratio being 1:1. The smutted plants also produced healthy tillers and few ears were partially infected. Main tillers infection ranged from 2% to 47%. The infected tillers (28-62 cm) were slightly lower than healthy ones (58-74 cm), and the tillering capacity of infected and healthy seeds was about equal.
