Two forms of organic manures combined with NP fertilizers were evaluated to measure this comparative impact on paddy yield and soil fertility at the Mannoo farm, during 1993-94. It was found that the maximum paddy yield could be obtained by either applying recommended dose of inorganic N fertilizer (80 kg/ha) or lowering its level to 40 kg/ha when supplements by green manure (dhaincha). On the other hand, high rate of farmyard manure (20 t/ha) in combination with lower N (49 kg/ha) also gave significant increase in paddy yield. The organic manures increased soil organic matter content and thus total nitrogen. Farmyard manures are scarce; whereas, fast- growing and short duration green manure crops like (dhaincha) can be easily grown during the fallow period of 40-70 days after the wheat harvest for improving soil physicochemical properties and sustaining the productivity of cereal crops.
