Workshop on monitoring biodiversity in protected areas of the Philippines

One of the aims of the Danish-funded technical assistance to the Conservation of Priority Protected Areas Project (CPPAP) is to design a biodiversity monitoring system for protected areas and to assist in its implementation in three sites. The team conducted literature search, consultation with managers and scientists, locally and abroad, and undertook studies on current practices in protected area management in Bataan Natural Park, Mt. Kitanglad Natural Park and Northern Sierra Madre Natural Park. Most information gathered on systems for monitoring biodiversity are academic and impractical and not suitable in the present context. It is suggested that monitoring should answer whether or not the management interventions in a protected area are effective in addressing biodiversity conservation. Since most decisions on protected area management are taken locally, the focus was limited to protected area levels only. The proposed monitoring system was primarily intended for terrestial CPPAP sites with possibility of use in other protected areas like NIPAP. The proposed field methods include: 1.) use of field data sheets; 2.) transect walks; 3.) photo documentation; and 4.) village meetings and group discussions. The objective of the workshop is to facilitate discussion of the theoretical framework and the proposed approach and methods, with a broader forum of scientists and protected area managers
