Plant bioprospecting of the medicinal plants utilized by the residents of Barangay [village] Lourdes Sur East, Angeles City [Philippines] in the treatment of common diseases caused by selected bacteria

The present study is focused on seeking locally grown plants that could possibly be a good source of medicine in the treatment for common diseases (such as diarrhea, wound infection, and the like) caused by pathogenic organisms such as Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphyloccocus aureus, which the researcher believes are the most common bacteria that cause several diseases. Results of the study showed that the residents of Barangay Lourdes Sur East have identified twenty medicinal plants in the treatment of common diseases namely: a.) for cough, bulb of garlic is commonly used followed by leaves of mango, leaves of eucalyptus and ginger rhizome. Based on the survey, all four medicinal plants were taken in decoction in which the residents claimed that they are effective. b.) For sore throat, ginger rhizome ranks the first, in which majority of the respondents recommend it although nine out of 50 respondents utilized okra fruit as well as eggplant leaves. Both ginger and eggplant leaves were taken in decoction while okra in boiled form. c.) For diarrhea, leaves of balimbing, guavas, mango, coconut juice. Coconut is also beneficial for urinary tract infection. d.) ginger rhizome and eggplant leaves in decocted form were used to treat stomach pain or gas spasm. e.) For skin disorders, such as boils, wound infection and skin irritation, gumamela or shoe flower, betel leaf, aloe vera, guava, papaya, kamias, yerba buena, ginger, bitter gourd, jackfruit, radish and cucumber. Alkaloids content of medicinal plants were discussed, as well as the effectiveness of crude extracts of the plants parts in inhibiting the growth of the different bacteria.
