Seventeen genotypes of durum wheat obtained from direct and reciprocal hibridizations between a durum wheat cultivar ('Abegao') and a branched tetraploid wheat ('Caxudo') was studied. The spike length, kernel number per spike, yield per spike and 1000 kernel weight was available. Some genotypes in comparison to their parents have longer ear length and increase in kernel number per spike, yield per spike and 1000 kernel weight. The spike length showed a positive correlation with kernel number per spike and yield per spike in all genotypes and a negative correlation with 1000 kernel weight, only in the parents ('Abegao' and 'Caxudo'). The kernel number per spike was negatively correlated with 1000 kernel weight in all genotypes except in the derived lines from reciprocal crosses ('Caxudo' x 'Abegao') that showed a positive correlation. These results indicate that it was possible to obtain genotypes with improved Kernel number per spike without negative effects in 1000 kernel weight
