[Detection and cartography of burned areas based on Landsat 5 TM spectral indices]
1999

The main goal of this study was to detect and map burned areas in two study areas with different terrain and land cover characteristics. The secondary goal was to compare the performance of the Kauth-Thomas multitemporal transformation proposed by COLLINS and WOODCOCK (1996) with NDVI and V17 image differences. Two pairs of Landsat 5 TM images, one pre and other post-fire were used in this study. The images were geometrically corrected and a relative radiometric calibration between the images of each pair was made on a band-to-band basis. The images were then converted to apparent reflectance values. The change components of the Kauth-Thomas transformation, DeltaBrightness, DeltaGreenness and DeltaWetness, and the NDVI and V17 differences of the post and pre-fire dates were calculated. The results, as expected, showed that it was easier to identify fire from the background in the coastal study area. In both study areas the spectral index with the best performance was the V17, which also produced a very good fit with the logistic model for both study areas
