Applications of cropsyst to improve nitrogen management of irrigated corn

The main purpose of this paper is to contribute to improve N fertilizer management in irrigated calcareous soils. Crop production is contributing to nitrate contamination of groundwater and superficial aquifers. Subsurface water rich in nitrate is recused for irrigation in some areas and is becoming an environmental problem from a water quality point of view. In the Urgell's Channel Area (Catalonia, NE of Spain), irrigated corn (Zea mays L.) has been surveyed during several years for soil, water and plant nitrogen, biomass, phenological development and grain yield. A comprehensive crop growth/management model has already been validated and calibrated using the large data base existing in this area. This model was used to provide preliminary answers to the question of how much reduction of the environmental impact can be achieved by lowering fertilization rates while preserving yield
