The authors describe condition of Polish agriculture and rural households prior to Poland's accesion to the European Union. The article contains information on assistance granted by the European Union to Polish agriculture so far and present the evolution of that assistance in 1990-99 as well as the changing priorities of asistance programmes and plans for the period up to 2006. The article analyses new pre-accesion assistance programmes, including SAPARD which is going to be the main source of financing agriculture from the EU funds in the years to come
