The effects of various ecosystems on changes in the concentration of oxygen and organic substances in the stream of the Hostiansky Brook were studied during 1996-1997. Organic substances were expressed by means of chemical oxygen demand by potassium permanganate (COD sub(Mn)) and biochemical oxygen demand during 5 days (BOD sub(5)). The results of a 2-year experiment showed that the mean values for COD sub(Mn) in 1996 and 1997 were 4.01 and 2.57 mg O2/L, respestively. The mean value for easy biodegradable substances, expressed by means of a BOD sub(5) indicator, was 2.15 mg O2/L in the first experimental year and 1.38 mg O2/L in the second one. Concentration values for dissolved oxygen ranged from 5.52 to 14.92 mg/L, its highest values being detected in the forest ecosystem and the ecosystem of meadows and forests. The present study was implemented within solving the Project No. 95/51 95/189 (A-61 G)
