During orchard operation, the influence of long-term grassing within interrows of apple-trees and pear-trees on the extent of grass covering and some soil properties was investigated. In 5th to 7th year after grassing, varietal mixtures of Festuca rubra, Festuca ovina and Poa pratensis produced better covered stands in comparison with their pure varieties. In this period, humus content in the soil profile of 0-300 mm increased from 1.88 to 2.45%, Cox content from 10.91 to 14.17 g/kg soil and a C:N ratio widened from 5.86 to 7.39. Frequent passing of machinery across the grass area has not caused the expressive changes in soil volume weight. On the average of years, it was only in autumn sampling when the value for volume weight reduced by 0.07 t per square m was higher than in the ungrassed surface
