Studies on dormancy and dormancy breaking of purple guinea grass seed

Result from the study on cause of dormancy showed that the covering parts of seed had no effect on seed dormancy. The cause of seed dormancy was suspected to relate to the germination inhibitor (ABA) in the covering part. The freshly harvest seed had relatively deep dormancy which could be overcome by after rippening during storage up to 7 months. The experiment was then conducted to ascertain the mechanism and methods to overcome dormancy in Purple guinea grass. The pure seed was dry heated at 40 deg C for 4 days before imposing to 4 seed treatments. The treatments were distilled water as a moistening agent (control). GA3 at 50 ppm, 0.2 percent KNO3 and the combination of 0.2 percent KNO3 and prechill at 8 deg C for 4 days. It was found that dry heated treatment can promote germination when germinated with distilled water and GA3. However, the dry heated treatment will affect seed dormancy and encourage germination in the treatment using GA3 as a moistening agent within 4-6 months after harvest. The percentage of germination was increased between 12.5-4.5 percent. The highest germination was obtained from prechilled treatment in both no dry heated and dry heated, followed by using GA3, KNO3 and water as a moistening agent respectively.
