Studies on variation in the leaf scald pathogen, Xanthomonas albilineans

Leaf scald disease, caused by Xanthomonas albilineans, has become increasingly important in Mauritius since 1988. Changes in varietal reaction and natural infection in maize triggered investigations to detect variation in the pathogen. Serological tests showed that out of the three known serotypes. the African one was present, in addition to the Mascarene serotype which was known to occur previously. Field trials with several varieties and inoculation with a number of isolates from sugarcane and maize indicated that not only differences in virulence existed among isolates, but marked differential varietal behavior were also present. Strong interaction was present between two isolates of the Mascarene ane African serotypes on varieties M 574/62, M 126/63 and M 1236/71. Evidence has been obtained for the first time of the existence of distinct races of the leaf scald pathogen. It is also apparent that races occur within the Mascarene serotype and between the latter and the African one, a phenomenon which has not been reported for any sugarcane bacterial pathogen.
