Research and development on the utilization of vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhiza and their combined effects with nitrogen fixing bacteria in legumes

Rhizospheric soil samples growing to soybean, peanut and mungbean were collected from 14 provinces in Thailand. Spores of Vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhiza (VAM) were isolated from the soil samples. Six genera and 37 species of VAM were identified. These include the genera Acaulospora, Entrophospora, Gigaspora, Glomus, Sclerocystis and Scutellospora. Thirteen species could be cultured in the pot media using red sorghum and corn as host plants. Acaulospora scrobiculata, Sclerocystis sinuosa and Glomus spp. were the most VAM founded in those soil samples. Isolated spores of VAM were tested for their efficiencies on mineral nutrition and yield improvement of legume plants. The experiments were carried out under glasshouse and field trial conditions. Comparative treatments among VAM species, the type and amount of VAM inoculant uses, and treatment interactions between VAM and the nitrogen fixing bacteria Rhizobia were undertaken. The results showed significant increases in mineral nutrition particularly phosphate and yield improvement of legume plants inoculated with VAM under sterile soil condition. Potential VAM species were Glomus claroideum, Glomus fasciculatus, Glomus intraradices and Gigaspora sp. Treatment interaction of VAM plus Rhizobia increased the percentages of VAM infection in roots as well as the number of root nodules though the yields and nutritive values of the plants were not significantly affected. Under non-sterile soil, field condition, the efficiencies of VAM inoculation were not significance.
