AUSCANE is a version of EPIC that has been modified to simulate the growth and development of sugarcane in Australia. It simulates the major physical and biological processer of the sugarcane farming system including weather, soil, temperature, hydrology, erosion, tillage, nutrient cycling, crop growth and yield. Crop management practices such as irrigation, drainage, fertilization and liming can also be simulated. The model was developed as a result of collaborative research between the CSIRO Division of Tropical Crops and Pastures, the Bureau of Sugar Experiment Stations and the United States Department of Agriculture. The model can simulate sucrose accumulation as well as cane yield. The model requires basic weather inputs, soil information, details of tillage operations (planting, cultivating, and harvesting) and crop management details (rate and timing of irrigation and fertilizer applications, etc) to simulate yield and sugar content of each crop in a variable length crop cycle. Crop characteristics, such as the efficiency of converting solar energy into plant biomass, biomass partitioning, nutrient content of the plant biomass, and stress relationships, are incorporated through coefficient chosen specifically for each variety. The model has been used to simulate commercial cane production from the main cane growing areas in Australia and many practical applications have been investigated. AUSCANE is a versatile model applicable to a wide range of sugar industry investigations.
