Experimental evidence for the presence of different smut resistance mechanisms in sugarcane

Inhibition of germination of spores of Ustilago scitaminea Sydow by plant extracts is experimentally demonstrated in the present paper. Different varietal responses to fungus filtrates with hormonal activity and the existence of high correlations among morphological characteristics and variety resistance under natural conditions are also shown. The presence of chemical, biochemical and morphological mechanisms of resistance is discussed. The results suggest the necessity of searching for smut resistance markers taking into account the importance of all the mechanisms reported in this paper.
