Review of prawn researches in the mangrove ecosystem in Thailand: Case study in the Tha Chin estuary, Samut Sakhon province

Distribution and abundance of prawn in the Tha Chin estuary, Samut Sakhon Province at the mangrove fringes totalled 7 stations were investigated during 16-18 May 1997 by day and night catches using push net. A total of 4 families, 8 genera and 17 species of prawn were recorded. Banana prawn, Penaeus merguiensis was the most dominant with Macrobrachium equidens and Metapenaeus ensis were next in term of abundance. Economically important prawn species found in this area were Penaeus merguiensis, Macrobrachium equidens, Metapenaeus ensis, Parapeneopsis hungerfordi and Exopalaemon styliferus. The highest density of prawns was found at Station 1 on Bang Ya Preak shoreline. The night catches were more than day catches in term of abundance.
