Red rot-Fusarium stem rot of sugarcane in Thailand

Epidemiology and control measures of red rot-Fusarium stem rot were studied. Among 20 commercial varieties, Ragnar, Co 798, F 155 reacted as resistant while F 147, Q 100 and Co 775 proved moderately resistant to this disease complex. Cane stalks in diseased fields and neighboring fields with and without evident internal and external disease symptoms, had some level of infection. The two fungi in infected plant debris mixed in soil were shown to be pathogenic up to 2 months through reduction of sett germination and occurrence of shoot mortality. Highly susceptible varieties were susceptible to infection at all stages of growth while susceptible and moderately susceptible ones were affected up to 5 months after planting. The latent period of the disease has been estimated to be between one and two months. Nine fungicides inhibited the growth of Colletotrichum falcatum and Fusarium moniliforme on PDA. Infected setts soaked separately in four of these fungicides had increased germination but the treatment did not eliminate completely the pathogens. Benomyl, thiabendazole, propiconazol, tebuconazol and thiophanate methyl at 500 ppm showed good protective efficacy when used in conjunction with disease-free setts, crop rotation, stem borer control and other suitable cultural practices.
