Effects of gamma-irradiation on root-knot nematode, M. javanica, were investigated. The percent mortality of J2 increased with higher doses. A dose of 7.5 kGy killed the J2 within 1 day. Hatching was also inhibited with increasing doses and hatching was inhibited completely at 6.25 kGy. A bioassay test on tomato was used to measure viability and reproductive capability of irradiated J2 and eggs. The J2 and eggs irradiated with a dose of 4.25 kGy failed to induce galls reproduce on tomato plants. In combination tests of irradiation and heat treatment, no synergistic effect on J2 or eggs was measured. Hot water treatment at 49 deg C for 10 min or 20 min without the added irradiation treatment could inactivate the J2 and eggs.
