Effect of different levels of irrigation and fertilizers on maize response

Corn grown under irrigation at Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok, Thailand, during the dry season (January to April 1990) was subjected to three soil moisture depletions combined with three levels of nitrogen and phosphorus application. By varying the quantities of irrigation and nitrogen and phosphorus applied an evaluation was made. Irrigation applied at high moisture level and with high nitrogen and phosphorus as basal dressing was found to be beneficial in increasing the yield. The average maximum grain yield in three replicates was 7.20 tons/ha with total N and P application (basal and top dressing) of 325 kg N/ha and 200 kg P/ha under 20 percent available soil moisture depletion (ASMD) regime. Higher water use efficiency was also recorded in this treatment with a value of 14.45 kg/ha-mm. The total water applied throughout the season in the 20 % depletion was 498 mm. Samples of the aerial parts of maize were taken and analyzed for N and P concentrations. The data gathered after correcting the concentration of these nutrients to a fixed dry matter weight level of 5 grams per plant formed the basis for testing and developing the preliminary diagnosis and yield prognosis models. A good agreement between predicted yield and obtained yield showed the reliability and correctness of the model.
