Improvement of baby corn variety Rangsit 1 by S1 selection cycle 2

Baby corn ears for Agro-industrial factories in Thailand have been increasing drastically since 1983, resulted from the demand of canned baby corn in the U.S. and European markets. The existing variety: Rangsit 1 need to be improved for high yield and quality as well as downy mildew disease resistance. started improving the second cycle of S1 selection in Rangsit 1 at Phrao in 1990 rainy season. By planting the variety in downy mildew natural infection nursery about 3 rai, using 75 cm distance between rows and 25 cm distance between hill, planted 2 seeds/hill. A 50 kg/rai of 15-15-15 fertilizer was applied before planting and a 25 kg/rai of urea was top-dressed after 20 day emergence. A 600 cc of alachlor was sprayed after planting. At the pollination stage the 500 of 2 ear-plants were selected and self-pollinated in order to generate S1-lines. By harvesting time, only the 348 healthy S1-ears were selected and their seeds were kept seperately in the storage room. According to result of the first selection cycle, Rangsit 1 showed a little progress in yield and quality due to low genetic variation. The former data from 1987-1989 revealed the Rangsit 1 was significantly lower yield and quality than the new baby corn variety Chiang Mai 90. The improvement program of Rangsit 1 by S1 selection have been ceased since 1990. The remnant seeds of the variety were kept as baby corn germplasm in the cold storage.
