Relationship between side fat thickness, feed intake in last days of pregnancy and during lactation and rearing performance in sows

A total of 106 Camborough sows were used in study. The side fat thickness of sows was measured before farrowing and in each week of lactation. Daily feed intake was registered. All litters were weighed at farrowing or day after farrowing past litter balance and at weaning. Side fat thickness before farrowing ranged from 10.33 mm to 35.00 mm. The loss of side fat during suckling period was 1.31 mm +/- 2.29 mm. Sows farrowed with a litter size at birth of 10.58 +/- 2.83 live born piglets. The number of weaned piglets after three week suckling period was 8.74 +/- 1.45 per litter. Side fat thickness before farrowing had a significant influence on feed intake (p 0.05) and on loss of side fat during suckling period (p 0.01). Total feed intake influenced positively piglet growth (p 0.05), number of piglets at weaning (p 0.05) and litter weight at weaning (p 0.01). Related to the results of all sows, the animals with high total feed intake and favourable metabolism of side fat during lactation realized the best rearing performance. The side fat thickness of these sows ar farrowing was in optimum, between 19 and 23 mm.
