Phytochemical screening and biological activities of some species of family Apiaceae

Differences show that the examined species of family Apiaceae synthesize different structural types of the secondary biomolecules. In two species, Seseli tomentosum and Foeniculum vulgare, the dominant molecules were phenols and terpenes (C10, C15) while in Crithmum maritinum the dominant groups were coumarins and terpenes (C10, C15). The dominant phenolic compounds were petroselinic acid (Foeniculum vulgare) and syringinic acid (Seseli tomentosum). The highest essential oil content was in the leaves of Foeniculum vulgare (0.26%), the lowest in the leaves of Crithmum maritimum (0.13%). Limonene was the dominant component in Seseli tomentosum, alfa-pinene in Crithmum maritimum and linalool in Foeniculum vulgare. From the group of 8 bacterial strains, only the growth of Sporing aeroba abd Entherobacter cloacae was completely inhibited by the ethanol extracts of Crithmum maritimum and Foeniculum vulgare. From the examined species of family Apiaceae, only non-polar extracts (hexane and ethylacetate) of Crithmum maritimum inhibited fungal growth. Bioassay showed that 8 out of 12 examined extracts have a significant antifeedant activity. Four extracts (two water and two ethanol) of Seseli tomentosum and Crithmum maritimum have a negative value which indicates a phagostimulant response.
