Near-by the metallurgical plants the total soil content of all the studied elements exceeds their background values as follows: As - 17.5 times, Pb - 14 times, Cd - 12.5 times, Mn - 4 times, Zn and Cu - 3 times, Ni - 2.5 times. Moving from the smelter in the eastern direction, the soil total content of the studied elements decomes successively lower, and up to 5500 m is even commensurable with its background from most of them. Pb ans As are exceptions. Their content is nearly 3 times above the background values. The correlation relationships give some evidence for links between the soil heavy metals, arsenic and carbonates. NaNo3 extractable metal concentrations are very low compared to their total content. Practically all soil samples taken in the Kremikovtzi region have lead content between 1 and 4 times above the permissible level (PCL). Nearly - of the samples have arsenic above PCL and - of them - more than 3 times above PCL. Intolerable values for CD are also found close to the smelter.
