[Results of the artificial insemination of Awassi ewes with the fresh semen of rams of exotic breeds in Jordan]

The aim of the experiment was the evaluation of artificial insemination of Awassi ewes by the ram semen of two exotic breeds (Romanov and Charollais) imported from the Czech Republic to Jordan. Synthetic intravaginal progestogen sponges were used in order to synchronise the estrus in 110 ewes. A 500 i.u. dose of PMSG was administered at the time of sponge removal (12 days after insertion). The ewes were inseminated with fresh semen 50 and 60 h post sponge removal. Two reinseminations were done and 70 ewes became pregnant. Awassi ram served non-pregnant ewes and 25 became pregnant. The conception rate was 88.8 %, the fertility rate per ewe was 107.5 % and fertility rate per lambed ewe was 121.1 %. Genotype, age and live weight of dams affected significantly the fertility rate.
