Important microevolutional processes have taken place in the wheat powdery mildew population over the last thirty years. There has been a considerable change in the race composition of the pathogen population and in the prevalent races. Of the 78 races identified, only eleven (2, 26, 32, 35, 44, 46, 47, 52, 67, 72, 75) have "lived" for more than 15 years. Many races were only isolated in one or two years. The number of virulence genes rose from 2.03 in 1973 to 5.63 in 1993.
