Similarly to many other animal species, snakes can also be the subject of anaesthesia, either during veterinary treatment as pets and terrarium specimens, or during biological observation in the field. Because of their peculiar anatomy and other biological aspects, application of methods and agents frequently used with other animals needs special attention and consideration. The authors describe various methods of administering inhalation, parenteral, and combination anesthetics to snakes. They also report their own experiences with anesthesia on two Hungarian snake species (Vipera ursinii rakosiensis, Natrix natrix). During these experiments, the snakes were anesthetized with halothane with the use of a special equipment modified from a customary veterinary anesthetic apparatus.
