A lot of diseases germs who can cause pig diseases are very common in the herds in high pig density area's with increasing number of large scale herds. To eliminate all this disease germs out of the pig population is not possible and not necessary too. Only for a few epidemic disease germs the safeguarding strategy is required. For this purpose herd health programmes are introduced in the European Union to eradicate and to monitor specific diseases. The remaining diseases can be managed by a controlling strategy in with a balance between resistance of the pig and the infection pressure of the present disease germs can be realised. Based on slaughterhouse surveillance systems and herd management information it can be concluded, that there are big differences in the health status of the animals between the individual herds.
