First nation-wide survey of the golden cyst nematode (Globodera rostochiensis Wollenweber) between 1995-1998

Occurence of the golden cyst nematode (Globodera rostochiensis Wool.) had been detected on three locations before 1995. Potato was grown on two infested foci in family and small farms at Alsonemedi and Dejtar. On the third location, at potato breeding site at Keszthely, the infested area was grown with grass. In 1995-1998, the Plant Health and Soil Conversation Station started a nation-wide representative survey of the Globodera species. Detection of the nematodes from the soils of ware and seed potato growing areas was made according to the recommendations of EPPO methodology. Samples were yearly taken on one-sowth to one-seventh of the harvested area. Cyst-content of the soils was studied on 7.492 fields covering 34.986 ha. Seed potato growing areas are free from the potato cyst nematodes. In case of ware potato, 0.4 per cent of the sampled area (133 ha in 21 districts) and 1.9 per cent of the studied fields (142 plots) were infected by G. rostochiensis. Similarly to the two earlier infestation sites, the newly discovered areas are of small size, the golden cyst nematode have only scarely moved to larger fields
