Effect of moisture and heavy metals on the activity of L-asparaginase in alfisols and vertisols

Laboratory experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of moisture, heavy metals and microbial growth inhibitors on L-asparaginase activity in two Alfisols and Vertisols from Andhra Pradesh L-asparaginase activity increased linearly from 20 to 60% water content and then levelled off till 200% water. Pre-incubation of soil for 4 to 48 h under aerated condition brought about a sharp increase in activity till 12 h. Significant increase in L-asparaginase activity was observed up to 7 days in submerged soils. The activity decreased with the additon of 5 and 10 g of Cu, Zn, Fe, Ag and Hg of soil. The inhibition was higher in Alfisols than in Vertisols.
