Adhesive strength of the glue substances in the colleterial glands of the silkmoth, Bombyx mori

The colleterial glands of the silkmoth, Bombyx mori, synthesize and secrete the glue substance in order to protect eggs from scattering. The adhesive strength (tensile-shear-strength) of the glue substances in the colleterial glands was measured by the method of Japan Industrial Standard K6850. Two alminum plates were glued at 25 mm square with the glue substances squeezed from the glands. The strength increased with the amounts of the substance and reached a plateau when the amount of the gland equivalents was beyond 29 mg, indicating that the glue substances from 29 mg of the glands were necessary to cover all the area of adhesion between two plate. An average value of the tensile-shear-strength of the substance showed 11.8 kgf/square-cm at the plateau level
