Environmental quality criteria for aquaculture farms in Japanese coastal areas: A new policy and its potential problems

Environmental deterioration around aquaculture farms has been widespread in many Japanese coastal areas. In order to assess the impacts of fish farming and to prevent "self-induced deterioration", several criteria for the protection of the environment around aquaculture farms have been proposed. In this review, these criteria are summarized. They are classified into three groups, that is, criteria based on the water quality within the fish cages, which affects directly the health and growth of cultured fish, criteria based on environmental parameters which are sensitive to loading of organic matter, and criteria based on oxygen uptake rate or the sulfide content in the sediment as an indicator of mineralization of the loaded organic matter, which is well-known as the Omori-Takeoka theory. These criteria are evaluated, and problems are discussed from the viewpoint of their practical use in aquaculture farms
