Severe infection of seedlings in a nursery bed caused by mulberry [Marus] anthracnose fungus, Colletotrichum dematium

In late June 1994, a severe form of leaf spot disease suddenly appeared on mulberry seedlings of improved varieties which were transplanted into a nursery bed at the institute. Red-brown necrotic lesions formed on the leaves. In more severe cases, infected leaves fell. Colletotrichum dematium, the mulberry anthracnose fungus, was consistently isolated from the lesions. Transmission test carried out in the nursery bed suggested that the disease was transmitted through infected soil by propagules which overwintered in the soil of the bed where mulberry trees with several diseased leaves were growing; soil propagules in water droplets were splashed onto healthy plants, inducing a new infection. Although most of the diseased seedlings recovered after defoliation, latent infection of healthy leaves by the fungus had taken place, suggesting that leaves with latent infection may act as a secondary source of infection
