Yamakei No.26 was developed at the Yamaguchi Agricultural Experiment Station, and was registered as Italian ryegrass Norin No.18 named "Shiwasuaobe". A strategy for breeding of "Shiwasuaobe" was selection of plant with an ear emergenced within the year. Breeding material of "Shiwasuaobe" was made Yamaiku No.78 selected from "Minamiaoba" for very early period of ear emergence, and breeding methods were mass selection and maternal line selection. A brief description of this cultivar is as follows; 1) "Shiwasuaobe" is a extremely early maturing cultivar, emerging an ear in mid November. 2) Plant height is high within the year though it is low at spring first cutting in comparison with "Minamiaoba". Number of tillers are small, thickness of the culm and width of the leaf and length of lamina are smaller than "Minamiaoba". 3) Yield and dry matter rate within the year are higher than "Minamiaoba" by 10% and 2-3% respectively. 4) the amount of root and stubble are small, about half of that of "Minamiaoba". 5) Crown rust resistance was exhibited to a moderate, similar to "Minamiaoba". Blast resistance is better than "Minamiaoba". 6) Suitable places for cultivation of "Shiwasuaobe" are paddy fields and uplands of low attitude above sea level of Kyushu, Chugoku and the Kinki area
