Studies on pollution loads from sloped lysimeters, 2: Surface runoff of phosphorus and COD contents from upland fields

The runoff loads of phosphorus and COD contents from sloped upland fields were elucidated on the basis of the data collected in sloped lysimeters. The pollutant outflows including the pollutants on rainy days were monitored for 18 months using 4 experimental lysimeters in which corn and Chinese cabbage were cultivated. The concentrations of T-P and T-COD remarkably increased in surface runoff waters. The annual runoff loads of T-P ranged from 3.67 to 3.85 kg ha-1 yr-1, which were much higher than those in previous studies. On the other hand, the T-COD loads ranged from 32 to 37 kg ha-1 yr-1. Most of these runoff loads seemed to be the surface runoff contents containing applied organic compost. From results of this study, it was suggested that conversion of roughly cared sloped area to cropping field may cause large amounts of phosphorus and organic pollutants
