Changes occurring in microbial flora during composting of manure derived from dairy cattle

The aim of this study was to clarify the changes occurring in microbial flora during composting of manure derived fram dairy cattle. Samples for analysis were collected at seven stages of the composting period (50 days). The water content decreased from an initial level of 72% to 44% on day 50. The pH value increased in the early stage of composting from 7.6 to 8.4 and later decreased to 7.0. Microbiological analyses were performed on SPC, psychrotrophiles, thermophiles, coliform and clostridia. The bacteria per gram throughout the composting period were 6.11-8.51 log CFU g(-1) (SCP), 6.04-8.0 log CFU g(-1) (psychrotrophiles(, 5.60-7.53 log CFU g(-1) (thermophiles), and 5.30-6.65 log CFU g(-1) (thermophiles bacteria). The number of coliform bacteria decreased from about 4.48 log CFU g(-1) at the start of composting to fewer than 1.0 log CFU g(-1) in the latter stage of composting. In contrast, fungi, which were not seen in the initial stage of composting, appeared in the latter stage and amounted to approximately 5.0 log CFU g(-1). The main general of Gram-negative bacteria found at the end of composting were Citrobacter, Enterobacter, Alcaligenes and Pseudomonas
