Growth habits and influence of photoperiod on flowering in anthurium and spathiphyllum

Growth habits and influence of photoperiod on flowering in Anthurium and Spathiphyllum were studied. Flower buds of Anthurium were differentiated at the base of leaf petioles which were swelled, but some flower buds were aborted. Therefore it seemed that the decrease in flower number was caused by inhibition of flower-bud development and not by suppression of flower-bud differentiation in inadequate environment such as high temperature in summer. The daylength treatment seemed to be not practical for commercial production of Anthurium. Spathiphyllum had sympodial growth, and flower buds were differentiated at apical meristems. They were differentiated from the middle of September until the middle of June. Because of the high temperature from the end of June until August there was a resultion in the number of flowers. Long-day treatment obstructed flower-bud differentiation, short-day treatment did not. influence flower number and flowering time. The size of spathe and length of flower stalk were hardly influenced by daylength
