Properties of animal waste composts produced and marketed in Kagoshima prefecture [Japan]

In order to comprehend the properties of animal waste composts produced and marketed in Kagoshima prefecture, composting methods, analyzed their chemical compositions, and seedling experiment of those composts with "komatsuna" were investigated. The results were summarized as follows: 1) Composting term of animal waste composts were short. Those composts seemed to be fomented incompletely. 2) Moisture contents of the composts were low. They seemed to be adjusted to decrease for making handling easy. 3) Nutrient contents of the composts were high, because bulking agent such as bedding of them was little. Therefore the composts should be regarded as organic fertilizers rather than soil improving materials. 4) The primary growths of plants seeded Andsols with the composts were normal. On the other hand in "Petri dish test", the hot water extracts of the composts with high nutrient contents obstructed the primary growths of plants. The extracts of poultry composts were more obstructive than that of other composts. Because nutrient contents of the composts vary widely, the quality of them should be evaluated before the use of them. Consequently it is necessary to pay attention to the compost application rate for the good growth of plants and the conservation of soil environment
