A prototype of rice transplanter for mechanizing the mulching cultivation system was developed to perform mulch laying and transplanting simultaneously. It was then evaluated in the field based on performance accuracy of mulch slit cutting and transplanting. Actual mulch slit lengths were approximately 2 cm shorter than the theoretical value as the film was on paddy soil but 1 to 2 cm longer than the minimum value required for transplanting. The transplanting positions were 3 to 5 cm rearward of the theoretical one. Hence, some slits were shortened and made imperfect, and miss transplanting was observed when film placement was altered. However, 92% of mulch slits had seedlings transplanted normally. Therefore, this transplanter was confirmed workable in the field
