In order to develop a method for long-term storage, protoplasts isolated from thalli of Porphyra yezoensis form. narawaensis were frozen using a two-step procedure with an initial slow cooling rate (1 degrees C/min) to -40 degrees C followed by a rapid cooling rate when samples were plunged into liquid nitrogen.
