The effects of sesamin and episesamin, lignan compounds which are present in sesame seeds, on fatty acid biosynthesis, and on the docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) biosynthetic pathway in particular, were investigated in the human hepatoma cell line, Hep G2. Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), sesamin and episesamin were incorporated into the cell depending upon their concentrations, and EPA was metabolized into docosapentaenoic acid (DPA) and DHA. However, no significant changes in fatty acid composition were observed. This result indicates that sesamin and episesamin do not inhibit the biosynthesis of DHA from EPA
