The effects of white porous waterproof sheet mulch in autumn on flower bud formation of satsuma mandarin [Citrus unshiu] growing in plastic houses

The effects of soil drying and light reflection caused by white porous waterproof sheet mulch in autumn on flower bud formation of satsuma mandarin growing in plastic houses were studied. The mulch was treated after greening of the summer shoots flushed by pruning. The roof film of the plastic house was removed after pruning. 1) Mulching applied closely under the tree crown and between the trees to avoid percolation of rainwater into the soil deceased the soil moisture of below 10% (weight percentage) in about two weeks, and increased the germination percentage and number of flower bud after oil heating. Mulching for 38 days immediately after greening of summer shoots was more effective for germination and flower bud formation than mulching for 33 days one month later. 2) Mulching with about a 20 cm opening between trees to percolate rainwater into the soil was compared with mulching closely between trees in light reflection and flower bud formation. There was little difference between the two. The light of the lower part of tree crown was 5,100 - 7,200 lx by mulching, and was ten times as light as the control. Mulching had an apparent effect on flower bud formation and germination, and it was higher at the lower part of the tree crown than at the upper part of the tree crown. 3) the content of starch in summer shoots was increased by mulching
