Effect of the seed weight on the morphological characteristics and quality of jojoba seeds

Jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis L.) is a dioecious perennial evergreen shrub native to the south-western desert of North America. Varieties of jojoba have not been developed. This study was carried out to determine the relations among the weight, morphological characteristics and quality of jojoba seeds. The jojoba seeds were harvested from 4 populations (A population: 15,044 seeds, B population: 24,546 seeds, C population: 26,141 seeds, D population: 14,993 seeds) growing at Hyder in western Arizona, USA. Seed weight ranged from 0.01g to 1.40g. The highest range of seed weight was from 0.61g to 0.80g in the A and D populations. That range was from 0.21g to 0.40g in the B population, while from 0.41g to 0.60g in the C population. The range of oil content of seeds from the 4 populations was 43.57 - 53.40%. The correlation between seed weight and oil content was positive and highly significant. A significant negative correlation was found between the oil content and acid value. The protein and the moisture contents decreased with the increase of the seed weight. A significant negative correlation was found between the oil and protein content of the seed, and between the oil and moisture content of the seed
