We investigated the tillering characteristics and the grain yield in reference to number of seedling in rice variety Koshihikari on the no-till direct seeding culture of rice on a well-drained paddy field. The results obtained were as follows; 1) The primary tiller and the primary productive tiller were increased in the lower condition of seedling density, especially at the high nodal position. The secondary tiller and the secondary productive tiller were also increased in the same condition as the primary ones. 2) The number of spikelets per a panicle was increased in the lower condition of seedling density. The spikelets number per a panicle at primary productive tiller was similar to that of the main tiller. 3) In the lower condition of seedling density, the secondary tiller was more effective than the primary one for the high grain yield. 4) In the density from 50 to 300 seedlings per a square meter, there were only a little fluctuation as for the grain yield, the 1000-kernel-
